Australia is in the midst of the biggest baby boom in our history. Final figures for 2011 are expected to show the number of births topping 300,000 eclipsing the 250,000 children born at the peak of the original baby boom in 1961.

Online reviews worry some operators

Parents will soon be able to rate their childcare centre online and share their reviews with others.

The online childcare directory CareforKids is preparing to launch the TripAdvisor-style ratings system for users of childcare services, the first system of its kind in Australia and two years ahead of a promised federal government rating website.

The educational prospects of the nation”s children are being jeopardised by a “very poor” standard of teaching in preschools, a government-funded national study into the quality of early education has found.

The study which is monitoring 2500 children for 5 years, suggests many preschools and kindergartens may be offering the nation”s four-year-olds little more than playgroup sessions, depsite research indicating that early learning makes a crucial difference to children”s long-term development.

Families spent a significantly lower proportion of their income on childcare last year than they did in 2004, an official report shows.

Despite perceptions of run-away childcare fees, increased government subsidies slashed the out-of-pocket costs to families, in some cases by almost half.
